Yai Ana:

A Photo Essay

Each day, when Talat Banglamphu opens in downtown Khon Kaen, Yai Ana, 59, sits patiently awaiting customers new and old to visit her eclectic stall selling various items ranging from Thai chilies, to kitchen scrub brushes, to green mangoes. Officially renting a stall would set Yai Ana back 40 TBH per day, so instead, her daily location changes depending on which stall she finds unoccupied each morning. Living without a permanent residence in Khon Kaen for 17 years after immigrating from Cambodia to make a better life for herself, her infectious smile and generous hands offer small talk and khanom (snacks) to customers passing by. The lunch time lull at the market presents Yai Ana with some downtime to relax, snack and show off some of her favorite items.
